Class:  Sport
Events:  Downhill, 4X, DS, Super D

How long have you been riding?
Bikes, since 4, so ~30 years. 26 inchers since 91. It all began on a rully rigid Specialized rock hopper.

How did you get into this stuff?
Got into the FR/DH scene, as a natural progression when all the XC trails became too easy and was still looking for a challenge. Not to mention the downhill portion has always been way more fun than pedaling up, not that there is anything wrong with it. On the racing side, DH is all fun and you don't have to put in the monster training hours to be competitive like the XC world.

Favorite pro/s and why?

Cedric - the guy does it all, he's good, laid back, and has fun doing it. So Cal shoutouts to EC, Lopes, and King who can represent!

Describe your riding set up (your rig/s) and why you have them set up that way.
DH/FR bike - Yeti ASX w/7 inch SC in the front 5th Element in the back, 38/24 Dual ring bashguard -so I can still ride up (a must with no lifts in So-Cal.)  A great and super versatile frame, can climb with the FR bikes and can descend with the DH bikes. Trail/SD/Play/Jump/XC bike - Santa Cruz Superlight w/ 5 in Talas fork in the front, Float RC in the back. Again a super versatile frame, have had it forever - can do most things except drops and super steeps (the short wheelbase is a little sketchy and it is way beyond it's "intended use" so we'll see.) Road bike - Klein Quantum, stock + upgraded derailer. Spare bike - Baracuda AT2 (don't know why I still even have this. Beach Cruiser - Schwinn, a black rusty classic with a big basket on the front, that sits outside and gets no love.

What's your favorite event or venue and why?
Event - Sea Otter, until I go to Crankworx.  Venue - Mammoth, many improvements last year, looking forward to what they do next year. KEEP up the trail, stunt, and park building!

What's the best time you have had riding your bike?
Almost everytime out is a new best time, with MANY standout memorable moments along the way. Wouldn't know where to begin, the flow, the first time, the fun, the friends, etc.

What's the worst time you had riding your bike?
Tried to self shuttle (pavement up, trail down)a ride in Kernville by myself when it was 117 degrees F and about 32 miles. At the time the mileage or climbing wasn't the big deal, but even with doubling the food and water intake, it was the heat. Double the water was not enough. Towards the end, couldn't even coast downhill on a paved road and had to stop and lay down.  Luckily, a Sheriff stopped and took me to the car, where I had cold water and recovery drinks waiting. The sun was so intense the display on my HRM went blank.

What's the gnarliest thing you've ever pulled off?
I really didn't pull it off, my wife did - the whole birth process. Oh you meant biking - new ones keep happening all the time. That is the beauty of the sport.

What's the worst crash you've had?
"Knock on wood" - been pretty lucky here. It is usually those immoveable objects; trees, rocks, logs, etc. that get you in trouble, a broken rib being the worst.

Do you get nervous before a race?  How do you prepare?
I like to think of it as a "good" nervous. By getting plenty warmed up and keeping the legs loose.

What do you do for fun besides ride bikes?
Two planks on the snow at Mammoth and hanging out with my family preferably at the beach or in the mountains.

What music do you like?
Several kinds depending on the mood and activity. From the hardcore, while in the gym all the way to mellow country once in awhile when driving out in the middle of nowhere for some reason.PhilActionShotSm.jpg

What's your occupation?
Sales of High Tech test gear.

What kind of food do you like?
Actually don't like having to stop and eat. One of those Eat to live, not live to eat kind of guys.

Any advice you can provide up and coming racers?
1st and foremost have fun, 2nd pedal more brake less, and 3rd don't do anything different with your gear or setup on race day that isn't already second nature.

Anything else you would like to say?
Do all you can to keep the trails open! Be a good representative for our sport!!! Say high to hikers, always stop for a horse, and don't be one of those deadbeats who gets our trails closed. Okay I'll get off the trail advocate soapbox. See you on the trail.
